Huxley & Westwood
Upon furthering my love for Westwood for my
CCS project/essay and following up it with watching Vivienne Westwoods “Do It Yourself!” film she talked about
her influences in her fashion. About 6years ago she looked back and asked
herself “What you I talk to young people
today?” The answer that she shows into her collections is her politics,
which she has always projected over her reign as the British Queen of Fashion
especially in the 1970s when she styled the punk movement.
Huxley is one of the main influences to her especially
with her attitude to consumerism including the climate change. She uses fashion
as a medium to not only to show her collection but has a much more deeper
meaning which she is using to show messages and make people think.
The manifesto “Active Resistance to Propaganda”, AR as it is known, was influenced
by these 3 statements by Huxley, as they are believed to all be the components
of propaganda also the DIY movement. The worst evil to Dame Viv is non-stop distraction – if your
head is full of rubbish such as TV to superficial things you become part of the
consumer treadmill and sucking things up and not putting effort in to change
your life instead you become a follower in conformity. Breaking away from these
things will change your life and give you a much wider scope to the way you perceive
and look at the world. This is a graphic which she make using the 3 evils and
transferring it into a pill which people take or are given by politicians
everyday.

Tracey Emin and Vivienne Westwood
I am just writing us work in CCS.
I am looking at the relationship between fashion and art. Trying to get an
answer - Is Fashion Art? This semester
I am writing about Vivienne Westwood and making a magazine cover instead of a
poster. Instead of doing womenswear (which I would normally do) I have decided
to focus on menswear for a change, as well I am a man. I absolutely love Westwood for this reason I
have never done a project on her, as I like to show diversity within my work
and portfolio.
I found this image, which evokes
many different feelings and thoughts one mainly to me the exploitation of women
if you analyze the images components what the subject is doing with the
positioning money – it is collaboration
between the British artist Tracey Emin and Vivienne Westwood. It is contemporary
art but using fashion as a way of furthering the message with Westwood’s corset.

Graduate Fashion Week 2011
I recently joined twitter; following a lot of designers, brands and magazine editors. I have never really taken much interest or understood but totally see the point and power of it, communication and a perfect way of keeping people informed also targeting customers. Last week was Graduate Fashion week at Somerset House. Showcasing the future British talent of Designers. A twitpic was uploaded from the after party by the amazing Hilary Alexander. Love this picture as it has two most inspirational women in Fashion to me - Dame Vivienne Westwood and Hilary Alexander (Fashion Director of The Telegraph) Vivienne holding a cheeky glass of wine and having a laugh with Hillary. Now I am getting a little bit obsessed with twitter getting the first gossip and chat. Why didn’t I get on this before?!

Vivienne Westwood - DIY Clothing
“DIY! Don’t buy my clothes. Well, if you are rich or can afford a stylist, you can get me. But if not, do it yourself. My idea is that you can mix charity, vintage, Portobello Road, pieces of Ikat fabric; wrap it all around yourself, use a handkerchief as knickers, mix safety pins and jewelery. But above all do something! Be optimistic!”

During this time of economic recession and we are finding it hard to afford clothing why not DIY your own clothing as it says more about yourself and does not make you look the same as everyone else – I couldn’t think of anything worse “Blending In”. It is more sustainable to the environment by recycling your old clothing instead of buying the cheap clothing from Primark wearing it once; look at it from a different prospective. Bleach old jeans or turn a shirt back to front! The possibilities are endless....think outside the box
