“Since the advent of the
New Look in 1947, Dior Haute Couture has represented the utmost in elegance
around the world. Inside the ateliers, at the heart of Avenue Montaigne, the
finest traditions join with outstanding technical prowess to produce creations that
take elegance and dreams to the highest plane. Today, as before, Dior Haute
Couture accompanies the most beautiful women in the world and creates the story
of a mythical femininity that inspires the most exquisite dreams”
- Christian Dior
Yesterday the second couture collection
under creative direction Raf Simons. As his own aesthetic being minimal, as
former creative director for Jil Sander, it could have been difficult to
predict what his interpretation and look would fit in with Dior’s. However he
has re-interpreted the Dior look of elegance into a modern yet timeless style
with strong referencing to the 1947 “New
Look”. Stripping back the flamboyance of the predecessor John Galliano into
the original ethos of Dior’s clothes which are ultra famine – sleek
silhouettes/shapes & proportions. Simons is making his own mark on Dior, personally
I am not a massive fan of minimal look but Simons is fastly changing my opinion.
Less is definitely more.
